Q&A: Having a pergola built. Is $1475 too much?

Question by Spreading Good News!: Having a pergola built. Is 75 too much?
The pergola is over my patio. It is 12′ x 10′ and is treated wood. There are 2×8 boards that will run along the top with a decorative edge on them. Also some tiny ones to help shade. There is also a grid designed trellis at the 2 front corners. The posts are to be dug into the ground and cemented in. There are 2 licenced guys with ins building. I went to Lowes and I figured the wood to be only like $ 150 or so but not sure I’m correct on what is needed. Think the whole thing should only be like $ 500-$ 600. Is this reasonable thinking?

The lumber will be more than that. More like 3-400 and you haven’t included the decorative frills.
Add the cost of post holes, grading, concrete, time and knoweledge going into the construction.

Has anybody built a run-in shed?

Question by oli_jes: Has anybody built a run-in shed?
I was wondering if anyone out there has built a run-in shed…if so how big and what did it cost? (location and what type of materials?). I may have to put up a run-in while saving to put up a barn. Hoping I can put up a 12×24 for around $ 1000.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Prefab Shed or Custom Built Shed – Which type of Shed Design do you prefer?

Question by newfield: Prefab Shed or Custom Built Shed – Which type of Shed Design do you prefer?

Best answer:

Answer by Ray R
I’m a hobbyist woodworker and have used both prefab and custom-built sheds over the past 12 years. All things same, custom-built sheds last longer than prefab sheds as long as you use the right materials & plans.

But if you’re time-constrained, a prefab shed should be good enough as long as you buy it from a quality supplier.

There’s one caveat though: Prefab sheds suffer from durability issues in the long run. It is also harder to scale up a prefab shed when your storage needs increase.

Robins nest built in eaves of deck/gazebo?

Question by Jacque: Robins nest built in eaves of deck/gazebo?
A robin’s nest has been built in the eaves of our deck gazebo, a high traffic area. I have not touched the nest & since it’s high up, I can’t see if there are eggs in it. We have a dog and 3 young children & are out on our deck everyday. Will our dog’s presence scare the robins from returning? We haven’t seen them all day today, they were here yesterday. The nest is only about 2-3 days old & this is my 1st exp with Robins. I’d like to make it as safe for them as possible but am wondering if they’ve abandoned the nest already. Any advice will be appreciated, thanks!

Let nature take its course. If it’s a good spot for robins, they’ll stay and if not, they’ll go. We have robins build nests in trees along our sidewalk and very narrow porch, and they don’t seem to mind the traffic at all.

Whats the method to shingeling a newly built storage shed roof?

Question by Walter: Whats the method to shingeling a newly built storage shed roof?
Its a 12 x 12 shed with 1/2 in plywood roof panels. I never did a roof before. What will I need, and how is it done? Bottom to top?, top downward? Also theres a slight gap at the roof peak where the plywood panels meet. Any help appreciated.

Well, first you need to install a roofing underlayment. like 15lb roof felt. then you’ll need to install drip edge or the eave metal, this goes around the entire perimeter. Then you can install the shingles… the wrappers have the installation directions on them. You will need approx. 5 bundles of shingles, and a bundle of ridge cap for the top peek. I would guess that the gap at the peek of the roof is for a roof vent or ridge ventilation.

John, Who Built our Cob Shed

Four years ago John Freeman built our cob shed, oven and green roof with the help of staff and many volunteers. Every day of that summer John answered endless questions and turned a building project into an educational experience for green builders. We will be forever grateful for the work John did and so will all the visitors who come by every day. City Farmer.

that seems like a tight budget for such a large structure. i would budget more. i know you’re not talking about kits, but the kit price (the one i found) for a 12×24 is aver $ 4000.
http://www.unlimited-source.com/runinshedprices.htm gathering your own material would be quite a bit cheaper, of coarse. you can just model it out of one of these kits: http://www.unlimited-source.com/runin_photogallery.htm
