I had a concrete patio put in last summer. They said they were going to be putting in the expansion joint that goes between the patio and the foundation on the house but when they were finished they didn’t put it in and told me it wouldn’t be necessary. Now after the thaw, (I am in MN), the patio top is chipping away because it shifted along the foundation. Is this going to cause problems for me? I am afraid my foundation may have been weakened by this.

it could be damaging—water will enter the crack between slab and foundation and have no way to get out thus it will keep moving with freezing and thawing –they should have drilled the foundation installed 1″ rebar bout 12″ apart and bout 12 ” deep in foundation slab best thing to do now is to seal the crack with a hydraulic sealant to keep the water out–clean the area real good of all dust and particles,,,then pour sealant in crack,,, to top of patio slab

The shed is one of those molded resin sheds that won’t rot. It comes with flooring made of the same material. I planned on just digging a level area a few inches deep and laying gravel down.
Do I need more or less?

We laid concrete blocks down under ours to keep them level and good support. We have had them for 6 years now and they are just like new and are not warping or anything. It also keeps them up a bit so water does not run in them.

I’m building a shed foundation in my backyard. I’ll be working with 2″x8″ pressure treated lumber that will rest on Pier-Deck Blocks as listed in the article in this link – http://www.finehomebuilding.com/how-to/articles/firm-foundation-backyard-shed.aspx I need to know :
1) What is an appropriate size for the wood screws? Keep in mind I’ll be screwing it from one 2″x8″ into another 2″x8″ and…..
2) The area I’ve excavated (13 feet by 9 feet), what is an appropriate number of pier-deck blocks to provide adequate support/coverage? (I figured it to be at 16 but would appreciate your feedback on this).
***NOTE*** I originally wrote I figured I’d use 16 Pier-Deck Blocks, but have changed that to 20 Pier-Deck Blocks.

1) 3 inch x 8s screws , Galvanised or sheradised ( if wet climate ) and countersink then cover the countersunk hole with putty or filler ,dont know what you Americans call galvanised or sheradised and I dont know what climate in U.S.A. you are in but if you suffer rain , below freezing temps then bear it mind .
2) check what size pier blocks are available if 3 x 2 then you’ll have to dig another foot out . I assume pre cast concrete paving by pier blocks .
