I am building an 8′X12′ wood frame shed. How many rafters should I have and at what pitch?

Question by adttech2003: I am building an 8′X12′ wood frame shed. How many rafters should I have and at what pitch?
I have already built the entire frame for this shed, but have yet to start the roof. I do not know how many rafters I should have and at what pitch I should use as well. And how do I determine if I have the right pitch once I construct each rafter. I already know how to build the rafters. That is the easy part.

I would use 16″ centers for rafter spacing and the pitch can be whatever you want as long as water will run off.

how do you figure materials to build roof for a 10 x 12 with a 4:12 pitch off center? (contemporary design to?

Question by Gina: how do you figure materials to build roof for a 10 x 12 with a 4:12 pitch off center? (contemporary design to?
I’m designing a storage shed to reflect the style of my house (contemporary). The roof peak will be off center, but will have a 4:12 pitch. This also allows me a loft area for storage along one wall. The peak will be 12′, sidewalls will be 8′ (long side of roof) and 10′ (short side of roof)

You just need to figure the total square footage of the roof. Take each side separately (since it’s uneven) and multiply length x width (so 10′ x 12′ is 120 square feet). Total the 2 sides and that’s your square footage. Roofing is ordered in “squares” with each square covering 100 square feet, so take your total and divide by 100, and you have the amount of roofing you need to order. Good luck.
