4 beams to go over the bar and surrounding area, prob. around 8×8 structure. Could i design this on wheels as well? being able to move around on patio to follow/avoid sun is nice thing. is this possible or do you think it will be too heavy, i plan on shingling roof.

My son just put in a bar/grill on his patio. He designed it using a roof extended from his house roof. He used the “open grid” style to let the sun shine through. In rainy weather he threw a tarp over it with bunggy cords. Since you want to move your bar around on the patio and have a cover type roof I would suggest this. Construct a frame out of pvc. The piping and elbows are cheap, assy would be lightweight and use a small tarp over the top and fasten it down the way you want to. The pvc cuts easily using a hacksaw and the parts snap together with a brush on glue. Build the frame separate from the bar if you want to or design it so it attaches to the bar. This sounds like a fun project! Your original idea in using lumber with a roof would make the entire assy too heavy and you would have to stain it, etc..

Q&A: How Do You Add On In Addition To A-FRAME Roof?

Question by s_wisecup: How Do You Add On In Addition To A-FRAME Roof?

Not at all a good idea. An A-frame design works by carrying the weight of the top of one side of the roof down through the other side of the roof. If you remove one side to add on, the opposite side is at a grave danger of collapsing.

Having said that, there are ways to do this, but you really need a structural engineer to evaluate your current design to come up with a way to carry the weight of your roof down to the ground.

How do you estimate the load bearing capacity of a normal wood frame roof?

Question by fidowithaspot: How do you estimate the load bearing capacity of a normal wood frame roof?
I’m interested in green roofs, particularly retrofitting existing roofs with a plant layer. One of the trickiest problems, besides the plant issues, is figuring out how much weight a roof can bear. This is crucial, not only for figuring out your planting plan, but also to make sure that winter snow isn’t going to cave in the roof. Are there good rules of thumb out there to estimate this?

I saw a show on HGTV a few weeks ago. I caught it after they had built the eco roof. It looked like they used extra braces and such. I am sure you can call some companies that specialize in this.

The most important criteria in designing an eco-roof is to ensure that the structure is strong enough to support the additional wet weight of the soil and plants (approximately 10 to 25 pounds per square foot). Calculations proving that that there is adequate support are required. In general, an existing building with a gravel-rock flat roof will support 10-12 pounds per square foot. This was based on an article for the state of Oregon.
