Some of those Amish folk have moved into my town, they look like they mean to take over, what should I do?

Question by P. S. G: Some of those Amish folk have moved into my town, they look like they mean to take over, what should I do?
Well, there goes the neighborhood. They drive their damn wagons all over town, let their horses block traffic and sit around making stuff out of wood. They get together and make a ruckus at their “Barn-raising” party, they don’t even care that you need a permit to build that. There used to me only 4 barns in the whole county, now there’s 104. This used to be a good family community, now the school children have to deal with pressure from the Amish kids bad influence- “come on, butter-churning is cool, it makes you feel great, all the cool Amish kids are doing it, just TRY it”. Pretty soon, one of my kids might be drawn into the Amish “lifestyle”, the other day I found several handmade wooden chairs in his room. He says he was just experimenting but I know something is wrong. He gets up at 5 am every morning and tries to milk the dog. This is out of control, we need congress to pass a law and send these Amish back to wherever they came from. They take all the butter-churning, wood furniture and barn building jobs away from true Americans.

your kids should be allowed to make their own decisions, if they want to be Amish, there is nothing wrong with that… (better Amish then Heroine whore) probably, when they find out that they are “not allowed” (by Amish law) to watch TV anymore they will stop “being Amish”

just let your kids find their own way in life…

Should I build a 10 x 12 shed from scratch?

Question by ejerabek: Should I build a 10 x 12 shed from scratch?
I did most of the finish work on our house. I can be a very handy guy, but I’ve never framed anything before. I am one who can study a new project and figure it out almost always albeit with lots of frustration much of the time. I need advice:

1. Is is more cost effective to build one from scratch or just buy a pre-built plastic one (I have the time as I’m a teacher off this summer)? It appears that we can find a plastic one for around $ 1,100. My preliminary estimates have the cost of building one at around $ 600. This could work IF I don’t come close to suicide in the process doing it alone!

2. Should I go with a treated wood or concrete foundation? Could a simple gravel floor do the trick?

3. How can I make sure the shed won’t fly away in a windstorm? (even if I get a pre-built one!)

4. We want one that’s low maintenance. So, what kind of roof and siding should I use?

5. How can I get enough light without electricity? Are skylights too difficult to include?

Best answer:

Answer by marvin A
a plastic shed is nice but the foundation must be absolutely perfectly flat and level to start with or the parts will not fit correctly. There is no wiggle room.

A metal shed is good also and there is room for wiggle if you use a drill bit now and then.

A homemade wooden shed is a nice summer project for you. And the wiggle room is limitless.
dont put down a concrete foundation –it increases your taxes.
use treated lumber for the floor– the shed does not need it.
use 2x3s not 2x4s and save money
use pine (or white wood) and not fir and save money
use msd not plywood and save money–1/2 inch is fine
wall studs are 24 on center and not 16 save money
ETC.
Good luck.

What wood should I use for outdoor buildings?

Question by bearboy826: What wood should I use for outdoor buildings?
I am building a cage for my outdoor rabbit. I need to know the best wood and the best wire. The cost would be helpful and what store I should buy it at.

Answer by Cakes
ok, i actually do not think there is a great deal of difference in the wood or wire types.

there IS two types of wood that are less susceptible to rot BUT one of those types gives off very bad fumes and the other one can give u bad splinters. so i think it is not what u want for your rabbit. maybe for a deck or shed but not rabbit house. those two types are cedar and redwood so don’t let no one talk u into using them even tho they are weather resistant.

weather resistant wood is also the “TREATED LUMBER” but do not get that kind either because it has poisons put into the lumber. the poisons keep rot bacteria from liking the wood but rabbits chew on wood a lot so u want no poisons there.

about other woods, it is not a matter of quality. the thing is, no wood is actually a lot better than any other for this job. wood quality has to do with hardness or grain direction or bendability, and those factors are not relevant for this project. if Anything is relevant to this project i would think it might be Thickness. like, if the walls are thicker then they may insulate better.

wait, one Quality of wood u do not want is particle board. because the rabbit might chew through it too quick. But other than that, get the cheapest as long as it is not too rough or else just sand it. probably it will be pine. and get type that is thick enough to insulate well.

about wire, i believe it is chicken wire that you want but also they have special wire now for rabbits. link below. now, wire Does come with smaller holes than chicken wire; so it is kind of up to you but trick is to get some that nothing can squeeze through, either coming in OR going out.

one thing about wire, sometimes it is galvanized. that means coated in zinc so it is more weather proof. now, personally i think that is not good because u can get an overdose of zinc if u eat it or rub it on your skin. but finding chicken wire that is Not galvanized, well u might have to look a bit. but it’s worth asking about.

where to get wire and wood. first look for large home improvement store like homedepot or lowes. because they will have both plus the nails and all. but also good wire comes from the feed store so maybe try them if u want Best selection of wire. the feed store is like farm supply. they sell grain for horses and such; maybe look in yellow pages for animal supply. now, another advantage of feed store over home improvement is feed store will probably sell u wire by the foot and u will not be stuck buying a whole roll. but here is page from lowes that shows their wire so u can get idea:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productList&No=60&Ne=4294967294&Ntt=chicken+wire&Ntk=i_products&category=Fencing&N=6+4294948994

and here is their page on wood:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=categorySelect&Ne=4294967294&category=Lumber&N=4294959196

here is many plans about how to build a rabbit house:

make a parts list to take with you to store.

What kind of paint should I use for an outdoor wood patio?

Question by Brandon S: What kind of paint should I use for an outdoor wood patio?
I have recently built an outdoor patio made of wood. I am now trying to figure out what kind of paint is appropriate for my patio. Are there different kinds of paints I can use, or is there a certain one for wood patios? Like Solid Colors, Semi-Tranparents, Toners, and Clears.
And is there a difference in paints for a deck and paints for a patio? Or are they the same?
And yes, I’d like something that leaves the natural wood grain and color.

Short answer is Deck Paint. It will hold up well under the sun and rain, etc, and is easy to care for.

Q&A: Building garage, how much money should they ask for b4, during and after, how often during contsruction ?

Question by franky: Building garage, how much money should they ask for b4, during and after, how often during contsruction ?
I am having a garage built out back. 400 sq feet. Its almost done. The workers who are building are friends of a friend, they have been asking for money ($ 1000, 300,500) like every day, for parts, material, etc. What usually does it cost for materials and labor? I am in southern calif.

Best answer:

Answer by Another Nickname
If you are using a reputable company, no money other than a down payment/deposit should be issued until the work is completed. If you are shelling out money every day, make sure you record this and never give cash. Always a check or money order. Something that can be tracked. At the end, make sure that what you’ve already given is deducted from your total fee. Garages can be expensive, but it really just depends on how extensive the work is and exactly what you’re having done.

How much should I charge for this painting job?

Question by Homemadevader37: How much should I charge for this painting job?
My Landlord would like me to paint the awning over her front porch. It is aluminum and the paint is flaking away in big pieces. It is not that big an awning, maybe 8′ by 4′ or so of surface area. I don’t want to charger her to much but I also don’t know how long it would take.
Should I just quote her an hourly rate and go from there?

Q&A: What should do about my car accident where a car hit me and has no insurance and i am on the liability plan?

Question by ♥AUDREY♥: What should do about my car accident where a car hit me and has no insurance and i am on the liability plan?
I was driving into a shopping center & was @ the entrance. I was making sure that there was no incoming cars on the left side because i was trying to make a right. Suddenly, I hear this loud noise, like metal being rubbed on cement. I turn to my right and I see a car driving on the sidewalk, over Chipotle’ patio furniture. Then in the process of him trying to get off the sidewalk, he runs into my car, passenger side and slides against my car. He continues to go straight and drives over a medium and hits an Escalade. He is stuck on the medium and tries to get off, but cant. He got out and stood there, like nothing happened. As soon as he heard the cops, he ran off, but they caught him. He had no liscense, no papers, cant even speak english. I may have heard that the car has insurance. Basically i dont know what to do, my insurance wont pay & im def not payin. I tried callin the cop that handled my situation 2 get info on insurance of the other car/guy, but so far no reply. HELP!

Answer by Sue
Call your agent & find out if you have uninsured motorist property damage coverage. If you have it, be sure to find out when it will or will not cover you. There are some states with odd laws for this coverage. If you do not have collision coverage & do not have uninsured motorist property damage, you unfortunately are out of luck. You will have to either pay for the damages yourself or go after the other party for damages. If he didn’t have a license or insurance (was the car stolen?) then he probably doesn’t have any assets either & even if you get a judgement against him, you may never see your money.
You are entitled to at least a brief police report that shows the name of the driver, the vehicle & the insurance information. You should be able to call the police station and find this out & you are also entitled to know if the person had insurance.

Q&A: I have some wooden garden chairs and benches that need some color. Should I paint or stain? Also, I’d like to?

Question by professor grey: I have some wooden garden chairs and benches that need some color. Should I paint or stain? Also, I’d like to?
some real color but don’t want the furniture to look tacky. I like things to look natural since I live on a river and the landscape is all indigenous to the area. One bench over-looks the river, two others are in a patio area. I also have a picnic table that could use to be re-painted, it’s currently a dense red. If I paint, do I need to prime first? Any color suggestions?

With the preferences you have described I would consider a honey walnut, cedar, or cherry stain.

What gazebo should i buy for a pool measuring 15×48?

Question by Drano: What gazebo should i buy for a pool measuring 15×48?
I recently bought a pool measuring 15ft x48in and I’m looking to cover it with a gazebo but I can’t seem to find a place that has the size or bigger for what i’m looking for. I found one measuring, 14′ x 12′; 106″ center height, and another measuring Dome Garden House Gazebo – 13′x10′. I’m not sure if both could fit over the pool. If someone has either advice or a place i can go, please let me know.

Best answer:

Answer by Josie M
Don’t limit yourself to gazebo’s by name anyway. Widen your search for a pergola as well. Also, you can get one custom built for your pool size. You want to be careful with a pool cover because they will need to be bolted into your concrete which can lead to cracking of your pool’s surface. I have added 3 source links that may help you with your research. Good Luck.
